Workshop

Engaging with living systems takes more than tools and frameworks. To embody system change is to change what you pay attention to — and how.

To help others embody it is to actively accompany that change — meeting people inside their frames without losing your own, and finding moves that open both frames wider — always from a ground of mutual respect.

What this is

A three-day workshop. Two distinct tracks.

The mix is deliberate. RE-AMP members bring real situations with real stakes. The practitioner cohort uses those situations as practice ground — developing a different quality of attention to what's unfolding in the room. Each track deepens the other. And both cohorts get to learn from what two decades of network-based systems change actually looks like from the inside.

Practitioners

Network leaders and facilitators with some grounding in systems thinking — enough to see where it matters, not yet enough to feel consistently sure-footed. If you've found yourself losing your footing when someone believes strongly in their own assumptions, or noticing a gap in how a group is thinking but not quite knowing how to address it, this track was designed with you in mind.

RE-AMP Members

Working with their own complex climate-change contexts — learning and using systems thinking tools and frameworks to see and navigate the dynamics at play in their work. RE-AMP's own 20-year history serves as a living illustration of what it looks like when a network commits to systems thinking over time, through changing conditions, with real-world stakes.

What you'll take away

The deepest takeaway
isn't a model

Models will be part of the landscape. But the deepest takeaway is a more finely tuned instrument — your own attention, and what you do with it when you're in a conversation where people's thinking starts to run out of room.

What the practitioner experience involves

Listening for what's underneath

The practitioner track is structured around a specific kind of practice: listening to how people describe their situations, and learning to hear what's embedded in those descriptions — the assumptions about conditions, the frames doing the invisible work of limiting possibility, the purposes pulling in different directions without anyone quite noticing.

You'll be developing structured ways of attending — below the content, to the systemic patterns underneath. Where is this person locating their situation on the spectrum from simple to complex, and where does their purpose need it to be? What small shifts in how their situation is structured might move them toward better fit for purpose?

"Where is the opening in what they just said?"

And you'll be doing this together with the others in the practitioner track — debriefing what you're hearing, building shared language for what you're noticing, and practicing the inner moves that keep you curious and present when a strongly-held frame starts pulling you in.

The cohort is small, which means room for the kind of reflection that actually shifts practice.

Real situations. Real practice.

It happens in the room

Over three days, you'll be working with live material — real challenges, real stories, real complexity. It happens in the room, in the moment, as things unfold. And then in reflection with a small cohort of peers who are developing the same quality of attention alongside you.

Who this is for

You've encountered enough systems thinking models to know they're more than frameworks — and you've had enough experience with groups to notice when another way of sensing and responding would make a real difference. You've also felt too many moments where you were at a loss for how to intervene, or found yourself pulled into a frame you couldn't quite see your way out of.

You're curious about RE-AMP and what two decades of network-based systems change actually looks like from the inside. And you're ready to turn your attention toward the craft of helping others think systemically — not just thinking alongside them.

If that's you, we'd love to have you with us.

Questions welcome.

Scaffolding the Future

I’m writing a practitioner’s guide to Social System Mapping — a developmental practice for the stewards, facilitators, and catalysts who tend systems-change networks. If you’d like to know when it’s ready, I’ll send word.
